What is agreeableness?

Agreeableness is the trait in the five-factor model that is about how you relate to others: how warm, trusting and cooperative you are, and how much you put harmony ahead of your own interests.

What does high agreeableness look like?

People high in agreeableness are often considerate, helpful and quick to see the best in others. They tend to avoid conflict, go out of their way to make cooperation work and care that others are doing well.

What does low agreeableness look like?

People lower in agreeableness are often more direct and competitive. They readily speak up, question others’ motives and hold their ground more easily. That can come across as critical, but also as honest and clear.

What are its facets?

In the most widely used breakdown, agreeableness has six facets: trust, straightforwardness, altruism, compliance, modesty and tender-mindedness. A person can, for example, be very compassionate and still not very compliant.

Is it better to score high?

Not necessarily. High agreeableness makes cooperation and relationships easier, but can make it hard to say no, set boundaries and look after one’s own needs. Low agreeableness can make one firm in negotiation, but bring more conflict.

Does agreeableness change across life?

Longitudinal studies find that agreeableness on average rises through adulthood, especially in middle age and later. Those are averages, and individuals can develop in other ways.

Frequently asked questions

Is high agreeableness the same as being naive?

No. Trust is one of its facets, but the trait is about warmth and cooperation, not a lack of judgement.

Can high agreeableness make boundaries hard?

It can. Many people with a high score recognise that disappointing others feels costly, and benefit from practising saying clearly what they need.
