What is conscientiousness?

Conscientiousness is the trait in the five-factor model that is about structure and self-regulation: how organised you are, how much you plan, and how easily you stick to what you have decided. It is not the same as being good or hard-working in a moral sense.

What does high conscientiousness look like?

People high in conscientiousness often like order and overview. They make plans, keep appointments, finish what they start and think before they act. Others tend to experience them as reliable.

What does low conscientiousness look like?

People lower in conscientiousness are often more spontaneous. They improvise, take things as they come and are more easily led by what is happening right now. That can bring flexibility, but can also make long-term goals harder to hold on to.

What are its facets?

In the most widely used breakdown, conscientiousness has six facets: competence, order, dutifulness, achievement striving, self-discipline and deliberation. One can, for example, be very dutiful without being particularly tidy.

Is it better to score high?

Not always. In research, high conscientiousness is linked to many things going more smoothly, but it can also bring perfectionism, rigidity and difficulty letting go of control. Low conscientiousness can bring ease and adaptability, but also procrastination.

Does conscientiousness change across life?

Longitudinal studies find that conscientiousness on average rises through adulthood, especially from the twenties to the forties, when many take on more commitments. Individuals can still develop differently.

Frequently asked questions

Is conscientiousness the same as perfectionism?

No. Perfectionism can go together with high conscientiousness, but also involves fear of mistakes and harsh demands on oneself.

Can conscientiousness be trained?

Habits, routines and clear systems can make it easier to act more conscientiously, even though the underlying trait changes slowly.
