What is an AI coach?

An AI coach is a program that holds a conversation with you about what is on your mind, asks follow-up questions, and helps you sort through it. It is not a clinician and it does not diagnose — it is somewhere to think out loud, available when you need it.

How is it different from an ordinary chatbot?

A customer-service bot exists to close your case as fast as possible. A coach has the opposite goal: to keep the conversation open long enough for you to get somewhere yourself. The difference shows in the questions — a coach worth the name asks more often than it answers.

How is it different from a psychologist?

Everything that makes treatment treatment: assessment, diagnosis, responsibility for the course of care, record-keeping, and a person who knows you over time and can act if something becomes serious. An AI coach has none of that. It can be somewhere to think between sessions, or while you wait — not a replacement for the session.

What is underneath?

Most are built on a language model. What separates them is what has been put on top: whether professionals shaped how it speaks, whether it remembers you between conversations, what it does when someone is in crisis, and where the data sits. Two coaches on the same model can behave completely differently.

What can it not do?

It cannot see you, cannot hear your voice shake, and cannot take responsibility. It can be wrong in a confident voice. And it cannot intervene — if you are in something acute, people need contacting, not a program.

Common questions

Is an AI coach the same as AI therapy?

The terms get used interchangeably, but "therapy" is misleading. Therapy is a treatment delivered by health professionals who are responsible for the course of care. A coach is a conversation tool.

Can an AI coach replace a psychologist?

No. It can be support between sessions or while you wait, but assessment, diagnosis and treatment belong with health professionals.

Are the conversations private?

It varies, and it is worth checking. Look at where the data is stored, whether it is used to train models, and whether you can delete everything.

Why do people use an AI rather than a person?

The most common answers are that it is there at two in the morning, that it does not get tired of you, and that it is easier to say something for the first time to someone who will not meet you again.
